Our vision for our youngest children is to enjoy school and to develop a love of learning through becoming effective and curious learners. To achieve this, we create a learning environment inspired by the children’s interests and offer exciting and varied learning opportunities incorporating indoors and outdoors at all times. Children are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems and explain their thinking. We use seven dinosaur characters to explain effective learning behaviours, such as an Askaraptor and a Thinkodocus.
We believe that children learn most effectively through play; activities are planned to lead children’s learning through play. Teachers and Teaching Assistants join in with children’s play to upskill and enhance it and to deliver learning objectives.
Phonics and Maths are taught more formally to the whole class each day. Children follow the letters and sounds programme, alongside ‘jolly phonics’ mnemonics. Time is spent developing fine motor skills, including pencil control. Letters are taught in a pre-cursive script which supports fluency of handwriting from Foundation to Key Stage 1. Maths is delivered daily and based on the children’s needs using Numberblocks, concrete apparatus and pictorial representations. Children also have weekly PE and Art and fortnightly Music lessons to further develop their skills across the curriculum in the areas of Communication and Language and Physical Development.
Children in EYFS are very much a part of the Newton Ferrers community; they attend assemblies with the older children and benefit in many ways from their older role models. They are buddied by Year 5 or 6 children and have shared experiences with their older friends.
